Getting an early start with GSM’s bilingual preschool
In an increasingly globalized world, the ability to communicate in multiple languages is a key advantage. At the German-American School Manhattan, we understand the profound impact that bilingual education has on a child’s cognitive and social development. Our bilingual preschool program is designed to immerse young learners in a supportive environment where they can acquire both German and English language skills from a very early age.
Our inquiry-based preschool curriculum is designed for 3 and 4 year-olds, and optimally prepares young learners for bilingual kindergarten and the elementary years (K-5). It consists of a 70/30 German to English language instruction ratio. The preschool program is inquiry and play-based discovery in a bilingual setting sets the foundation for many cognitive skills and supports mathematical skills and scientific thinking.
Cognitive Advantages of Bilingual Learning
Numerous studies have shown that preschool bilingual education has a positive impact on a child’s cognitive abilities. By exposing children to at least two languages at an early age, their brains become more flexible and adaptable. This cognitive flexibility translates into enhanced problem-solving skills, improved memory, stronger focus, and longer attention span. Additionally, bilingual preschool education leads to enhanced communication skills by expanding vocabulary in both languages and sharpening listening skills.
Research also indicates that the preschool years are the optimal time for second language acquisition, as children can more easily achieve native-like proficiency during this critical stage of brain development.
Bilingual Learning Opens Up the World
Learning a second language is not just about acquiring linguistic skills; it also opens doors to a rich cultural diversity. At our bilingual preschool, children are exposed to German culture, traditions, and customs, fostering a deeper appreciation for diversity and global perspectives.
Additionally, being proficient in multiple languages can lead to exciting career opportunities, as it enhances communication and collaboration in an increasingly interconnected world. This skill makes individuals more competitive in a variety of fields such as international business, translation, education, diplomacy, and more.
SEL Benefits of Bilingual Learning
Bilingual preschool education has valuable social-emotional benefits, as it is shown to boost children’s self-confidence and social skills. Navigating between two languages helps children develop a strong sense of identity and become more confident in diverse social settings. Early exposure to language immersion equips them with the tools to communicate effectively and build meaningful connections with people from various cultural backgrounds.
